Neville has a PhD in experimental psychology. He is Head of the Behavioral Epidemiology Laboratory at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, a National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia Senior Principal Research Fellow, and an honorary professor at Monash, Queensland and Melbourne universities.
Thomson Reuters (2015) identified him as a Highly-Cited Researcher and as being among the World’s Most Influential Minds in the Social Sciences. His research deals with preventing chronic diseases (primarily type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease) through a better understanding of physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors – too little exercise and too much sitting.
He and his collaborators conduct a program epidemiological and experimental studies on the health consequences of too much sitting, plus observational and intervention studies to identify the environmental and social determinants of physically-active and sedentary behaviours. His program aims to build a comprehensive body of evidence within a Behavioural Epidemiology framework, so as to inform public health and clinical approaches.
